Athlete's and Parent's Information Packet
Please read the following carefully and if you have any questions please feel free to call or e-mail me.
Head Coach:
Mr. Jason Fennes - jfennes@montville.net or "contact" button above.
Welcome to Montville’s Track & Field Team called the Mustangs (9 - 15 yr. olds) or the Cheetahs (5 - 8 yr. olds).
First, our attendance policy this year is: athletes only have to attend one practice a week to participate in meets. However, to run in the "scoring heat" (or the fastest heat) in a race, or to run in a relay or participate in the shot put or long jump, then you must attend two practices a week.
Practice and Meet Information: All children participating in practices will also compete in the meets. All practices will be at the Montville High School Track from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesdays through Thursdays. The Cheetahs (5 - 8 yr. olds) will have meets on Thursday and Friday nights at 6:00 P.M. The Mustangs (9 - 15 yr. olds) will have the majority of their meets on Sunday afternoons at 1:00 P.M. The season schedule is distributed at the first practice and is available on this website. It is your responsibility to transport your child to the meets, therefore carpooling is highly recommended.
Rules and Regulations: Practices are vital for the children to succeed both physically and mentally at the meets. Meets are also an important and fun part of the program, just as games are with baseball or soccer. Track and field is a very individualized sport, however it does have relay events that consist of a team of four members running with one another. Therefore, a child who is scheduled to run in a relay with three other teammates and he or she does not show up, hurts the rest of the team. So, I have developed the following rules and guidelines for this track season:
1) Attendance will be taken at EVERY practice and at every meet! Each child must attend one practice a week to participate in meets. Each child must attend two practices a week to run in the "scoring heat" of a race, run on a relay, or compete in the Long Jump or Shot Put.
2) If a child will be missing a meet then it is the responsibility of that child and/or parent to notify the Head Coach, Jason Fennes, in advance. If a child misses a meet without notifying Mr. Fennes then that child will not be allowed to participate in the following week's meet.
3) If a child misses more than one meet without advanced notification, then that child will not be allowed to participate in meets for the remainder of the season.
Parent Responsibilities: The adults who supervise and coach this program (including Mr. Fennes) are volunteers. They are parents who have given their valuable time to the children of Montville and your cooperation and assistance is appreciated. Any questions or problems pertaining to the track program should be addressed to the head coach: Jason Fennes.
Please try to have your child at practice (5:55 P.M.) and especially at the meets (12:30 P.M. or 5:30 P.M.) on time. Many times important information is announced the first few minutes of practice and the very important warm-up is done first, as well. When picking up your child from practice, please try to be on time and please come down to the track to get your child. We will not allow a child to run up to a car that is beeping at the top of the hill in the parking lot. Also, we are not always going to hold practice on the track or football field. We will be moving around throughout the area including the community park, tennis courts, woods and the hills behind the H.S. We always walk back to the track when practice is over, so if you cannot find us, do not panic we will return to the track by 7:00 P.M.
Child Responsibilities: Your child should bring a water bottle to practice and wear clothes that are appropriate for running outside. In the early weeks, it may be warm during the day, but it gets very cold, very fast when the sun goes down. Your child should wear sweatpants and a sweatshirt with gloves and a hat, if necessary. They can wear shorts and a t-shirt under the sweats and if it is not to cold then they can take it off. Jeans, pants, sweaters, and heavy snow coats are not recommended because they are uncomfortable and limit your child's movement. Running sneakers are much more appropriate than tennis shoes, basketball sneakers or cross trainers. If you have questions about what type of running sneakers would be appropriate for your child or where to get them, feel free to ask any of the coaches. We will also be offering "racing flats" to those children who would like to buy them. Details will be made available within the first few weeks of practice.
Inclement Weather: With track meets occurring almost every weekend, practices, as I said before are vital for the children to be prepared physically and mentally. Therefore, it is very rare for practices to be cancelled. Snow, thunderstorms, heavy rains, or extreme cold are times when practice will be cancelled. You can check this site after 5:00 P.M. to see if practice has been cancelled or not. You can also check this site for meet cancellations after 11:30 A.M. for Mustangs and after 5:00 P.M. for Cheetahs.
When we do have practice and severe weather moves in, shortening it, the children will be brought into the High School. You can pick them up by entering the H.S. through the main entrance and walking your child down to your car. Once again, we will not send a child out to a car that is beeping their horn.
